TABS second team travelled to New Earswick aiming to do the double on them this season.
With a depleted squad and giving second team debuts to both Joe and Darren Young we needed a solid start. We warmed up and were put into bat on a damp wicket.
With Mark Knights continued run in the first team we opened with Jim and Dale who were due some runs.
Despite no pace in the wicket and a slow outfield both batsmen started seeing the ball quite well and after 20 overs had reached 72/0. A change in bowler brought a change in luck as Jim fell caught at slip to a skier.
Mike Cole fresh from exam revision came to the crease, however, he soon returned to the hut on a rare off day – caught at cover for 1. Andy Heaps promoted up the order also found things tough- getting a good delivery to bowl him soon afterwards.
Suddenly we were 3 down. Chris Binnie joined Gibson and found the boundary with a couple of hearty strikes. Gibson got to his 50 with a quick single prior to a couple of straight drives to the boundary rope.
Once again a bowling change brought about the big wicket as Gibson fell LBW to a quicker delivery for a stylish 63. Binnie soon joined him in the hut for 24 as the bowlers gained momentum. From this point we needed the Captain to find the boundary, but it wasn’t his day stumped for 6.
The innings stuttering to a close at 155/8. Disappointing considering the start.
Following a decent tea provided by the players we reconvened in the field.
We needed a start a got one with Joe Young snatching his first wicket with a catch taken by keeper Wilkins. New Earswick attacked and after 10 overs were 47 for just the one wicket. Mike Cole managed to redeem himself with clever bowling took 3 quick wickets, with Captain Williams also back into the attack we looked in good shape with NE 66/5.
Despite some spirited bowling the batsmen defended well along with a drying outfield which assisted them. The scoreboard ticked over helped by two dropped catches as the target score was reached – even with a late consolation wicket for the Captain.
Despite the loss there were a couple of positives on the day.
Thanks to Emma for scoring. Next week at home to highflying Stillington.
