TABS second team entertained Sheriff Hutton at the oval on another warm match day. After a warm up which most attended ( we are still aiming on every player achieving this prior to the end of the season) Captain Williams lost the top and the opposition elected to bat first.
On the back of two heavy defeats we needed to start well and concentrate. The first wicket coming in the second over with Matt Wilkins taking a catch off the Captains bowling. Another soon followed and with J White also grabbing a wicket we had SH 41-3 and 57-4.
With TABS on the front foot a vital catch was dropped, potentially costing us dearly as 61 runs later – along with another opportunity to take a catch Andy Heaps finally snagged the number 6 well caught by Chris Binnie – who also claimed another catch and a run out in a fine display of fielding. Along with two for Alex and one for Jim, the fielding apart from the big wicket which went to ground was solid.
SH 172 all out in 40 overs. Captain Williams returned 4-33 and Andy Heaps 2-28.
After the wicket was swept, lined and a quick break taken we reconvened with the bat. An additional 4 overs would ultimately come in handy in what was to be a terrific game of cricket.
Openers Mark Knight and Dale Gibson opened again. With very accurate line and length bowling – with only one wide and one no ball and one bye all game, it was difficult to score easily, especially with a five man ring on the off side protecting the short boundary.
Knight the first to go for 25, Jim Riley joined Gibson at the crease and the score moved on as one opener took a break. Jim soon fell going for a big shot getting caught for a brief cameo. Chris Binnie fresh from his fielding exploits soon found the fence and was most unlucky to be adjudged LBW. DRS May have said otherwise!
Young Jonny White joined Gibson, smacking the first ball for four to take the score past the hundred mark. The score moved along until the second drinks break and then immediately afterwards Gibson was out with the score on 111 to a sharp catch by the excellent SH keeper for a back to form 38.
At this stage it could have gone either way and right up to the last over it proved to be the case, Alex came and went as did Rob – hampered by injury, Jonny too was somewhat unfortunate to be given LBW for a useful 23 which left Rowan and Andy to somewhat tentatively at first get us over the line, thanks to a six from Rowan and a square cut from Andy, to joyous applause on the boundary rope.
A three wicket win in the last over against a useful side who played the game in good spirits. Excellent team effort after a couple of poor results. 30 points in the bag.
Thanks to Emma for scoring, Phil for umpiring and the extra support at the end of the game to get us over the line. We celebrated with some of the first team who were also victorious in a low scoring game.
Next week at home to Knaresborough.
With everyone willing and able to make the warm up please!
